St. Michael and St. Gudula Cathedral

St. Michael and St. Gudula Cathedral is located on a hill in Brussels and is one of the city’s most prominent and magnificent cathedrals.

The cathedral’s patron saints—Archangel St. Michael and Martyr St. Gudula—are also the patron saints of Brussels. In 1047, Lambert II founded a chapter here and organized the transfer of the relics of St. Gudula, which had previously been housed in the Church of St. Gudula on Saint-Géry Island. In the 13th century, the cathedral was renovated in the Gothic style; the choir was built between 1226 and 1276; and the façade was completed in the mid-15th century. The cathedral is part of the Catholic Archdiocese of Mechelen-Brussels and serves as the archiepiscopal cathedral of the Archbishop of Mechelen-Brussels. The current archbishop, André-Joseph Léonard, is the Primate of Belgium.

Because St. Michael and St. Gudula Cathedral is located in the capital, it is often used for national Catholic ceremonies, such as royal weddings or state funerals. Its south tower houses a carillon of 49 bells made by the Royal Eijsbouts Bell Foundry, which is frequently used for Sunday concerts.
