Introduction: The museum opened to the public in 1864. The original Silk Museum was located in the Palais de la Bourse building of the Lyon Chamber of Commerce. By 1946, the entire museum was relocated to its current site — the mansion Villeroy.

Today, the Lyon Silk Museum boasts one of the richest and most exquisite collections of its kind in the world, featuring silk fabrics from the 17th century to the present, as well as textiles from various European countries dating from the 14th to the 18th century. Most notably, you can also watch weavers using antique looms to create many rare and beautiful silk pieces.

Among the museum’s exhibits, some come from private donations and bequests, while others have been collected from around the world. In addition to its regular exhibitions, the museum frequently hosts special themed exhibitions such as Chinese costume displays, Polish sash and shoulder strap exhibitions, and opera costume exhibitions.
