Many people may not know that France actually has a carnival similar to Taiwan’s Lantern Festival. The light festival in Lyon dazzles with its stunning installations.

According to Thrillist, this lantern festival called Fête des Lumières is held annually on December 8 and dates back to the mid-19th century. It originated mainly in connection with a plague; at the time, southern France was suffering greatly from the plague, and officials prayed to the Virgin Mary that if she could drive away the plague, they would honor her.

This festival attracts tens of thousands of visitors each year, as people gather in the streets to admire the dazzling lights. In recent years, the carnival has also incorporated technology, with huge light sculptures displayed in interactive ways.
