Lyon Cathedral

Lyon Cathedral is a Catholic church in Lyon, France, serving as the cathedral of the Archdiocese of Lyon. It was established by the city’s first two bishops, Saint Pothinus and Irenaeus, and is a yellow-hued church. Lyon Cathedral is also called the “Primatiale” because in 1079, the Pope appointed the Archbishop of Lyon with the title of “Primate of the Gauls,” making him the foremost archbishop in France.

Construction of Lyon Cathedral began in the 12th century on the ruins of a 6th-century church and was completed in 1476. The interior measures 80 meters in length, 20 meters in width, and the nave reaches a height of 32.5 meters. It also houses a 14th-century astronomical clock. Before the construction of Notre-Dame de Fourvière, Lyon Cathedral was the most imposing church in the city. The most distinctive features of Lyon Cathedral are the crosses on either side of the altar, which have been preserved since 1274 and are regarded as the symbols of the cathedral.
