Place Sainte-Trinité

Place Sainte-Trinité is located in the 5th arrondissement of Lyon, on the slopes of Fourvière Hill. Calling it a square is not entirely accurate—it’s more like an intersection of several small streets, surrounded by ancient buildings at the heart of the UNESCO-listed Old Town of Lyon.

It was originally named “Le treyve du Gourguillon.” In 1658, Archbishop Camille de Neufville brought monks from the Augustinian monastery to Lyon, and in 1664, they settled in a house on the square. Because they belonged to the Order of the Holy Trinity and due to the order’s significant influence in France at the time, the square was renamed Place Sainte-Trinité. After the French Revolution, on January 10, 1794, it was renamed Place du Triangle (Triangle Square).

All the houses on the square are quite old, giving off a nostalgic European vibe. At the corner of Rue Gourgoulhon, No. 2 Rue Saint-Georges is the Maison du Soleil, built in 1723. It got its name because between the first and second floors, there is a painting of a golden sun on a blue background. The ground floor of the building now houses a café of the same name, which is very popular.
