Lyon City Hall

Lyon City Hall is located in the 1st arrondissement of Lyon, France, and is arguably one of the most beautiful historic buildings in France. To the west is Place des Terreaux, and to the east it faces the Opera House across Place de la Comédie. On July 12, 1886, the building was classified as a French Historical Monument.

In the 17th century, Lyon experienced growth, and the peninsula where Place des Terreaux is located became the city center. Lyon City Hall was built between 1645 and 1651. After being damaged by fire in 1674, it was restored in 1702 and again in 1853. The hall originally featured a strong Louis XIII architectural style, but after reconstruction, its exterior was adorned with Italian-style statues and a dome, making it one of Lyon’s most human-scale large buildings. The interior boasts luxurious Baroque-style decorations, and many ornate halls and corridors are open to the public.

At the center of Lyon City Hall stands a equestrian statue of Henry IV (1553–1610, the first monarch of the French Bourbon dynasty), surrounded by a three-story arcade structure and a bell tower about 50 meters high, all designed in an elegant classical style. The square in front of the City Hall, Place des Terreaux, is a favorite leisure spot for Lyon residents. At the center of the square is a fountain with a lifelike four-horse memorial statue in the pool.
