Kiel
Kiel is located on the shores of Kiel Bay in the Baltic Sea and is the capital of Schleswig-Holstein. Since the 1860s, the city has been a major German naval base, serving as the center of Germany’s shipbuilding industry and the eastern terminus of the Kiel Canal.
Kiel boasts a comfortable living environment and an elegant atmosphere. In some of the most beautiful parts of the city—such as the charming Kiel Fjord area and the grand modern city center—you’ll find Denmark Street, Kiel’s “living room,” lined with buildings from Germany’s prosperous era that showcase the unique charm of this coastal city. The sea extends deep into the urban core, and water is the soul of Kiel, with a strong maritime vibe pervading the city, inviting people to touch, feel, and experience it. Notable attractions in the city include St. Nicholas Church, the Statue of the Warrior’s Soul, the castle ruins, the City Hall, and the Kiel TV Tower.
Kiel is famous for its sailing competitions, and the Kiel Week sailing festival is one of the largest maritime events in the world. During the 1936 Berlin Olympics and the 1972 Munich Olympics, the rowing events were held in Kiel.
