Lucayan National Park

Lucayan National Park is located in Freeport, Grand Bahama Island, and is one of the most famous national parks in the Bahamas. In 1986, archaeologists discovered the skeletal remains of indigenous people in burial mounds on the island and in the park's underwater caves, confirming human habitation in the region before the Columbian period, and thus naming the park after them.

Lucayan National Park boasts lush vegetation, fragrant flowers, and breathtaking scenery. The park is home to nearly all the plant species found across the Bahamas. Its winding trails and boardwalks lead visitors to every corner of the park, where they can admire exotic plants. Especially from late spring to early summer, when bromeliads and orchids burst into vibrant bloom along the paths, filling the air with sweet scents, butterflies flutter, and bees buzz busily among the flowers—creating a harmonious and stunning scene. Like most island parks, Lucayan also has a beach, known as Gold Rock Beach. Tropical trees such as cocoa and palm trees densely surround the beach, offering visitors playing on the sand a refreshing sense of coolness.

Lucayan National Park features a cave and cavern system stretching 6 kilometers, making it one of the longest underwater cave systems in the world. During the summer, the cool, dark environment provides an ideal habitat for migratory bats and is also a favorite spot for remipedes (a group of organisms believed by researchers to be among the oldest crustacean species on Earth). Studies have shown that remipedes have lived in the Lucayan Caves for millions of years, even before their discovery there in the 1970s. These water-filled caves are an important part of the Bahamas’ natural and historical heritage.
