Rio de Janeiro: The Carioca Landscapes between the Mountain and the Sea
On July 1, 2012, the 36th session of the World Heritage Committee discussed and approved the inclusion of "Rio de Janeiro: The Carioca Landscapes between the Mountain and the Sea" in the World Heritage List. Rather than being merely architectural ruins, this heritage site is more like a unique urban landscape setting.
"Rio de Janeiro: The Carioca Landscapes between the Mountain and the Sea" extends from the highest points in the Tijuca National Park down to the sea, encompassing the natural elements that have shaped and inspired the development of the city. It includes the Botanical Garden, established in 1808, Corcovado Mountain with its iconic Christ the Redeemer statue, and the hills surrounding Guanabara Bay, including the extensively designed landscapes along Copacabana Bay. All contribute to this magnificent urban culture of outdoor life. Rio de Janeiro is also seen as a source of artistic inspiration for musicians, landscape architects, and urban designers.
