The best season to visit the red earth is from September to December each year. Standing at a high vantage point and looking out over the red-earth plateau stretching for hundreds of miles, you’ll occasionally see sunlight breaking through the clouds, illuminating the layered terraces of this fiery soil. With the changing seasons, crops like Yangmai flowers, buckwheat blossoms, potato flowers, rapeseed flowers, and radish flowers bloom in succession, presenting a dazzling array of vibrant colors. These vivid, intense color blocks stretch all the way to the horizon.The astonishing interplay of light and color attracts many photography enthusiasts to visit, hoping to capture these magically beautiful moments.

“Red Earth” refers to an area called “Huashitou” (located at the 109 km road sign) in Xintian Township. This nearly 100-square-mile region is the most concentrated, typical, and distinctive red-earth landscape on the Yunnan red-earth plateau. Without visiting Dongchuan, it’s impossible to imagine this breathtaking wonder. Gentle rolling hills are painted with large bands and blocks of red, dark green, light green, white, and yellow that stretch endlessly. Even those who have seen countless magnificent natural landscapes will surely be deeply moved by this land.

Yunnan’s warm and humid environment allows iron in the soil to oxidize and gradually accumulate, forming this dazzling range of hues.
