Every year from September to December is the best season to visit the red earth.Standing on high ground and looking out over the red-earth plateau stretching for hundreds of miles, sunlight occasionally spills through gaps in the clouds onto the terraced fields layered with fiery red soil. As the seasons change, fields of poppies, buckwheat flowers, potato blossoms, rapeseed flowers, and radish flowers bloom in succession, displaying dazzling and vibrant hues that leap towards the sky.The astonishing interplay of light and color attracts many photography enthusiasts, all hoping to capture these magical, incredibly beautiful moments.

The term "Red Earth" refers to an area called "Huashitou" (located at the 109 km road sign) in Xintian Township — a region spanning nearly a hundred square miles and home to the most concentrated, typical, and distinctive red-earth landscape on the Yunnan red-earth plateau. Without visiting Dongchuan, one can hardly imagine such a stunning spectacle. Gentle rolling hills are adorned with large swaths and blocks of color in shades of red, dark green, light green, white, and yellow, stretching as far as the eye can see. Even those who have seen countless majestic natural wonders are sure to be deeply moved by this land.

Yunnan’s warm and humid climate causes iron in the soil to oxidize and gradually accumulate over time, forming these dazzling hues. From a distance, the mountains and plains display various shades of red — dark red, purplish-red, and brick red.In Dongchuan, red soil stretches for hundreds of square kilometers. Some plots are plowed and left fallow, while others are planted with lush barley or wheat. Viewed from afar, it looks as if the heavens themselves painted these vivid, richly colored patches.
