Forest of Signs

The Forest of Signs is located in Watson Lake, Yukon, Canada, and is the most famous tourist attraction in the town. Many visitors come here specifically to see the over 100,000 unique signs scattered across this magical land.

The history of the Forest of Signs dates back to 1942 when a bulldozer damaged some signs. U.S. soldier Carl K. Lindley was tasked with repairing them, and while doing so, he created a sign pointing toward his hometown of Danville, Illinois. Lindley wrote his hometown’s name and mileage on a wooden board, then nailed the homemade sign in the direction of his home. Others who saw it began putting up signs pointing to their own hometowns as well. Over time, many travelers passing through also added signs with the names of their native places. As the years went by, more and more posts were erected and signs added, eventually forming the impressive Forest of Signs seen today.

In addition to directional signs, the Forest of Signs also features “quirky signs” from around the world, including signed Western-style dinner plates, vehicle license plates, hubcaps, frying pans, business cards, and more. With different languages and scripts, you can even find signs in Chinese put up by Taiwanese visitors.
