Hartland Covered Bridge

The Hartland Covered Bridge is the longest covered bridge in the world. Located in the village of Hartland, New Brunswick, it spans the Saint John River and stretches 391 meters in length. It was built in 1921.

The original bridge was built between 1898 and 1901, officially opened on July 4, 1901, but was damaged in 1920. It was rebuilt in 1921 and placed on new concrete piers. A roof was added in 1922, a sidewalk in 1945, and in 1980 it was designated a National Historic Site of Canada. The Olympic torch for the 1988 Winter Olympics passed over the bridge. On September 1, 1995, Canada Post issued a set of four “Bridges” stamps, one of which featured the Hartland Covered Bridge.
