Salmon Sculpture

The Salmon Sculpture is situated in the heart of Campbellton, New Brunswick. The story behind this colossal statue is quite remarkable. In 1997, Canadian fishermen caught an 8.5-meter-long, 1-ton salmon in Miramichi Bay near Campbellton — the largest salmon ever recorded in the world. In 1998, this salmon sculpture was built to scale based on the actual size of the original fish.

The salmon sculpture stands upright, with its head raised and tail naturally curled upwards. Its scales glisten in the sunlight, giving it a vivid and lifelike appearance. It is said that the arrangement of the sculpture also reflects the living habits of salmon. Below it is a large pool symbolizing the ocean, as if a live salmon has just leaped out of the water. The background consists of tiered stone steps, down which water flows, representing the salmon’s journey from river to sea. When the salmon mature, they return to their birthplace but must swim upstream, overcoming the challenge of leaping up each step to reach their spawning grounds, where they reproduce and complete their epic life cycle.
