Bayazid Bostami Shrine

The Bayazid Bostami Shrine is situated on a small hillside near the renowned port city of Chittagong in Bangladesh. Its exterior is a modern architectural structure, while inside there is an ancient mosque believed to have been constructed during the time of Aurangzeb (1658–1707), the last emperor of India's Mughal Dynasty, as well as an ancient tomb said to house the remains of Bayazid Bostami. However, some locals claim that the actual remains of Bayazid Bostami are not buried here and that the tomb is merely a site revered by devotees.

The Bayazid Bostami Shrine was discovered in 1831 and has since become one of Chittagong’s most famous attractions. When it was first discovered, the tomb was protected by a wall and surrounded by carved pillars, but these have now been replaced by modern structures. In front of the shrine is a pond inhabited by a rare species of soft-shelled turtle known as Bostami Kasim turtles, which are among the most endangered species in the world. According to mythology, these turtles are descendants of a demon who was punished by Bayazid Bostami and transformed into a turtle, condemned to live only in this pond. Steps surround the pond, allowing visitors to reach viewing platforms where they can observe these adorable turtles and even feed them.
