National Parliament House

The construction of the National Parliament House began in 1961 and was completed on January 28, 1982. It was built by the then government of Pakistan with the intention of creating a permanent federal legislative body to govern East Pakistan (now Bangladesh) and West Pakistan (now Pakistan). On February 15, 1982, the eighth session of the Bangladesh Parliament was held here, and it has since remained the sole venue for such gatherings.

Designed and built by Louis I. Kahn, the National Parliament House serves as the venue for all activities of the Bangladeshi Parliament and is one of the largest legislative office complexes in the world. It consists of nine individual buildings integrated into a single complex, with eight peripheral towers each standing 110 meters tall and an inner octagonal building rising 155 meters high. These nine structures house different functional areas but are interconnected via corridors, elevators, staircases, and lighting to form a unified architectural whole. The grand and imposing design of the National Parliament House has earned it recognition as one of the greatest architectural landmarks of the 20th century and is undoubtedly a masterpiece of Louis I. Kahn.
