Bangladesh Taj Mahal

The Bangladesh Taj Mahal is located 30 kilometers northeast of Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh. It is a replica of the historic Indian monument, the Taj Mahal, and was completed in 2008. This Taj Mahal was built over five years with an investment of $58 million by Bangladeshi film director Ahsanullah Moni.

The construction of the Bangladesh Taj Mahal began in 2003, but Moni stated that the idea of building this structure came to him as early as 1980 when he visited the Taj Mahal in India. To realize his dream of replicating the monument, he made six additional visits. Since many people in Bangladesh live below the poverty line and could not afford to visit the famous landmark in India, Moni’s vision for the Taj Mahal was to fulfill the dream of his less fortunate compatriots. The replica is built to a 1:1 scale, identical in size to the original. Marble and granite were imported from Italy, diamonds from Belgium, and 160 kilograms of bronze were used for the dome. The use of machinery enabled the project to be completed within five years.
