Established in 1926 during the late British colonial period, Bogyoke Aung San Market is located in downtown Yangon and is the city's largest and most bustling marketplace. The market is world-renowned for its colonial-era architecture and the cobblestone-paved walkways inside. It houses a variety of shops catering to foreign tourists, selling antiques, Burmese handicrafts, jewelry, artworks, clothing, and more, as well as pharmacies, food stores, and foreign goods shops for local residents.

Originally named Scott's Market in honor of James George Scott, a British colonial civil servant who first introduced football to Myanmar, the market was renamed Bogyoke Aung San Market after Myanmar gained independence in 1948, in honor of General Aung San. The ground floor of Bogyoke Aung San Market features numerous antique shops selling old coins, commemorative stamps, medals, and similar items. The central area is home to jewelry shops, displaying a dazzling array of jewelry, and most importantly, visitors can purchase famous Burmese jade, rubies, and other precious gemstones here. Every day, many foreign tourists visit to explore or shop, making it a lively hub. The other end of the market’s pedestrian street includes art galleries, handicraft shops, restaurants, and clothing stores. Today, the architectural structure of Bogyoke Aung San Market has been listed in Yangon’s heritage register.
