The word "Imam" originally means leader, model, example, paragon, or prayer leader in Arabic, and in Islam refers to the person who leads the congregational prayers. The Imam Mosque is situated on the southern side of Iran’s renowned tourist city Isfahan's Royal Square (Naghsh-i Jahan Square), and together with the square, it has been inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The mosque was constructed starting in 1611 and took over twenty years to complete, finally finished in 1638. The entire mosque is exquisitely built with exquisite craftsmanship and is hailed as one of the most splendid and astonishing Islamic architectural masterpieces in the world.

Both the interior and exterior of the Imam Mosque are adorned with intricate tilework, among which the most astonishing feature is several black bricks on the ground directly opposite the dome of the main prayer hall. It is said that if visitors clap their hands while standing on these black bricks, the sound can be clearly heard throughout the mosque, both inside and out. Additionally, the clever orientation of the Imam Mosque in relation to the square’s main entrance is another factor that contributes to its enduring fame: since a mosque must face toward Mecca, and the square mandates that all building facades must front the square, this made it impossible to align the mosque’s axis with the square’s northern main entrance. However, the designers ingeniously created an angled alignment between the mosque’s orientation and the square’s main entrance, preserving the square’s neat rectangular shape while also fulfilling the religious requirement for the mosque’s direction — achieving a perfect harmony.

The Imam Mosque represents the pinnacle of Iran’s millennia-long mosque-building history and stands as a magnificent example of excellence in architecture, wood carving, and glazed tilework. It is not only a religious center of Iran but also one of its most famous tourist destinations.
