Vank Cathedral

Vank Cathedral is located in Isfahan, Isfahan Province, Iran. It was built during the reign of Abbas I and constructed by Armenian immigrants who settled here. At that time, following the example of his predecessor Cyrus, Abbas I showed tolerance and welcomed the persecuted Armenians who migrated to this area, which led to the creation of this church.

Vank Cathedral is one of the oldest churches in Iran. According to historical records, construction began in 1606 and was completed in 1664, making it the largest and most beautiful cathedral in Iran. Outside the church, there are many statues, commemorating the fact that this was the site of the first Bible printing press in the Middle East, hence the statues of the owners of the printing house. The church is built in the architectural style of the Safavid Dynasty of the 17th century. Both its exterior and interior are rich in Armenian style, yet clearly bear traces of Persian and Arabic culture. The frescoes inside the church depict biblical stories, such as the creation of the world and the expulsion of humans from the Garden of Eden.

In the courtyard of Vank Cathedral, there is a bell tower built in 1702, as well as a dedicated exhibition area showcasing the 1915 Armenian Genocide.
