Iran Freedom Monument

The Iran Freedom Monument is majestic and innovatively designed. Driving from Mehrabad International Airport in the western suburbs into the city, this monument is the first thing that comes into view. Standing 45 meters tall with a base that is 63 meters long and 42 meters wide, the monument is grayish-white in color and constructed from reinforced concrete and marble. The Freedom Monument was completed in October 1971. In designing the tower, Iranian architect Hossein Amanat not only incorporated the strengths of foreign tower designs but also emphasized the expression of Iran’s national architectural style. The ground floor of the tower houses a museum and a cinema. The cinema can accommodate 500 spectators, with five film projectors simultaneously screening on a large screen. The films mainly showcase Iran’s long history, splendid culture, stunning landscapes, and historic sites. This place is always crowded with tourists, and movie tickets often require queuing to purchase. Ascending 275 stone steps spiraling upward from the base leads to the observation deck at the top of the tower. From the observation deck, visitors can take in panoramic views of the city: the resplendent ancient architecture, towering skyscrapers, wide and straight tree-lined boulevards—all stretching from the railway station in the southern part of the city, northward through the old and new districts, all the way to the summer resort at the foothills of the Alborz Mountains at elevations above 1,600 meters. The Freedom Monument lies on the central axis of Tehran’s urban layout. Starting from the tower, four broad and flat asphalt roads extend outward, like ribbons connecting the various streets and integrating the entire city into a cohesive whole.
