Ashgabat is located on the northern edge of the Kopet Dag mountain range, in the Ahal Oasis and at the fringe of the Karakum Desert. It is the capital of Turkmenistan as well as the country’s political, economic, cultural, and scientific center.

The city boasts numerous historical sites, parks, and museums, making it Turkmenistan’s most renowned tourist destination. Visitors can explore the Turkmen Carpet Museum, the Turkmen Fine Arts Museum, the National Museum of History of Ashgabat, among others. Additionally, since the dissolution of the Soviet Union, many grand new buildings have been constructed across the city, including the opulent Presidential Palace, the Neutrality Arch, the Earthquake Memorial Complex, and the Orphanage — all featuring unique architectural styles.
