Attraction Introduction Wonsan is the capital of Gangwon Province, serving as the political, economic, cultural, industrial, port, and cultural resort center of the region. Nestled between mountains and the sea and surrounded by rugged peaks, it derives its name from this scenic setting. Wonsan was established during the Goguryeo era (277 BC – 668 AD) and has been called Wonsan since the Goryeo Dynasty (918–1392). The Wonsan Port opened in the 1880s. After Japanese imperialism occupied Korea, they plundered gold, silver, rice, and other resources through this port. Today, Wonsan has transformed into a prosperous port city, a cultural resort destination, and a tourist hub. The city boasts renowned attractions such as Songdowon, Myongsasimni, the International Children’s Camp, along with comprehensive service facilities including the Songdowon Hotel, Dongmyong Guesthouse, and Songdowon Tourist Hotel. The average annual temperature is 10.4°C, with January averaging -3.4°C and August 23.2°C. The average annual precipitation is 1,406.3 mm. Forests cover about 65% of the city's total area.
