Ryongwang Pavilion

Ryongwang Pavilion is situated on the banks of the Taedong River in Pyongyang’s Chung-guyok district. A plaque inside the pavilion reads “The Finest Scenery Under Heaven.” Legend has it that ancient Chinese diplomats, captivated by the stunning scenery during their tour of Pyongyang, were so impressed that they inscribed these six Chinese characters to commend its beauty. The pavilion was first constructed in 1111 during the Goryeo Dynasty (918–1392), and after multiple renovations and reconstructions, the current structure dates back to 1670.

Built on the cliffs along the Taedong River, Ryongwang Pavilion harmonizes beautifully with the surrounding landscape. The southern side, near the riverbank, is built atop a high stone platform, while the northern side is supported by tall square pillars, giving the appearance of a two-story structure to maintain overall balance, with flooring laid above. During the 11th century Goryeo era, the renowned scholar Hwang Geum-won hung a pair of Chinese couplets here to extol the scenery of the Taedong River: “A seamless flow of water by the Great Wall, dots of hills in the vast wilderness to the east.” But he could not continue past the first two lines, feeling that his aspiration exceeded his ability, and set down his brush in lament. These two lines were later made into two plaques and hung on the inner sides of the two pillars of “Ryongwang Pavilion,” where they remain well-preserved to this day.

With its elegant architectural style and sweeping views from the top, Ryongwang Pavilion offers panoramic sights of both near and distant landscapes. It is counted among the Eight Scenic Spots of Korea’s West Coast and attracts numerous visitors every year.
