Palm Jumeirah

The Palm Islands are three large man-made archipelagos located in Dubai, namely Palm Jumeirah, Palm Jebel Ali, and Palm Deira. They are currently being constructed by the Dutch company Nakheel, with an estimated 80 million cubic meters of soil and rock required. Each island is designed in the shape of a palm tree, surrounded by a crescent, and will host residential and resort areas. This project was made possible due to the vast continental shelf along Dubai’s coastline and the shallow waters of the Persian Gulf, enabling such a massive land reclamation endeavor.

Palm Jumeirah broke ground in June 2001 and was completed between late 2005 and early 2006. Three five-star themed hotels were planned on Palm Jumeirah, mimicking the landscapes of Okinawa, Brazil, and Venice, and built on the crescent. Palm Jebel Ali commenced construction in October 2002 and was completed by mid-2008, featuring a boardwalk shaped like Arabic poetry verses at the tips of the palm's fronds. Palm Deira started in November 2004 and is expected to be completed by 2015. Once finished, it will be ten times larger than Palm Jumeirah, accommodating one million residents, making it the largest of the three palm islands.
