Introduction The Monument to the National Independence of Indonesia was built amid strong patriotic fervor and stands as a symbol of Jakarta. It is located in the center of Merdeka Square Park in the city center. Ordered for construction by Indonesia’s first president, Sukarno, in 1959, it was completed in 1968. This stone monument stands 137 meters tall, with a torch sculpture at its peak made of 35 kilograms of gold, symbolizing the Indonesian people's determination to achieve independence. The reliefs on the monument depict the heroic struggles of the Indonesian people against Dutch colonial rule. Nearby, there are also fountains, pools, and a statue of a national female hero. The monument is the most prominent building in Jakarta. In the basement of the monument is a museum showcasing the history of Indonesia’s independence, featuring numerous sculptures and oil paintings that comprehensively illustrate the process of the Indonesian people’s struggle for independence prior to 1945.
