Museum Bahari Indonesia

The Maritime Museum is situated in the Old Sunda Kelapa Port in the Penjaringan district of the capital city Jakarta, within the former warehouses of the Dutch East India Company. These warehouses were built at the mouth of Jakarta’s main river — the Ciliwung River — and can be divided into two sections: the Westzijdsche Pakhuizen (West Bank Warehouses) and the Oostzijdsche Pakhuizen (East Bank Warehouses). The Westzijdsche Pakhuizen consists of four building units, which were originally used to store goods such as chili peppers, nutmeg, coffee, and clothing for maritime voyages. Nowadays, three of these building units have become part of the Maritime Museum.

The Maritime Museum focuses on the history of Indonesia’s maritime affairs and the significant role the sea currently plays in the nation’s economic development. The museum displays models of fishing boats and other maritime activity tools from various parts of Indonesia, as well as numerous models of ships and cannons used by the Dutch East India Company. Based on their content, the exhibitions are categorized into sections such as Modern Shipping, Traditional Navigation, Shipbuilding Tools, and Information on Maritime Activities and Folk Customs. The Modern Shipping exhibition area showcases various navigational aids, Indonesian navy maps, information about lighthouses, and photos of old K.P.M. ship voyages, among others. In the exhibition themed “Biological Oceanography,” visitors can also learn about the biodiversity of Indonesia’s coastal regions.
