Sultanahmet Square

Originally known as the "Hippodrome of Constantinople," Sultanahmet Square is located right in front of the iconic Blue Mosque in Istanbul. During the Byzantine Empire era, people were passionate about horse racing and chariot competitions, and the Hippodrome of Constantinople served as a chariot racing arena and sports center at that time. The name "Hippodrome" comes from the combination of two ancient Greek words: "hippos" (meaning horse) and "dromos" (meaning racecourse).

Today, Sultanahmet Square is adorned with blooming flowers and shaded by lush green trees, offering a beautiful and pleasant environment. The surrounding wooden houses add a touch of old-world charm to the area. The square has become a popular spot for relaxation and recreation among Istanbul residents and is also one of the city’s famous attractions. Only a few remnants — such as the "Obelisk of Theodosius," the "Serpentine Column," the "Obelisk of Constantine," and the curved wall of the former Hippodrome — still evoke the essence of the ancient arena.
