Legend has it that during ancient wars, enemies often cut off a city's water supply to force surrender. To prepare for such emergencies, cities built underground cisterns to store water. Beneath Istanbul lie hundreds of such subterranean reservoirs, and the Basilica Cistern is the largest and most magnificent among them, capable of holding 100,000 tons of water.

The Basilica Cistern was constructed in the 6th century under Byzantine Emperor Justinian I but remained undiscovered until the 1960s, adding another layer of allure to Istanbul, often hailed as the most romantic city in the world. Spanning 138 meters in length and 64.6 meters in width, the cistern covers an area of 9,800 square meters. It is supported by 336 marble columns, each 9 meters tall, forming a vast brick-vaulted ceiling. Most of these columns feature Ionic and Corinthian styles, with a few in the Doric style, arranged in 12 rows and 28 columns, standing like towering trees in the expansive hall. As you descend the entrance steps, the sound of dripping water gradually fills your ears. Inside, under the warm red dim lighting and amid the misty air, the pale stone columns bear the marks of time and flowing water, exuding a serene, mysterious, and ethereal atmosphere. Clear water beneath your feet teems with cheerful fish, seemingly welcoming every visitor.
