Ortaköy Mosque

The official name of Ortaköy Mosque is the Büyük Mecidiye Mosque. It is located in Beşiktaş, Istanbul, Turkey, on the waterfront of Ortaköy Pier Square, one of the most popular spots along the Bosphorus Strait. The Ortaköy Mosque enjoys a picturesque setting surrounded by both mountains and water — the hills are not far away, while the sea lies right before your eyes, offering a truly beautiful environment.

The Ortaköy Mosque was first built in the 18th century but was unfortunately later destroyed. The current Ortaköy Mosque was commissioned by Ottoman Sultan Abdülmecid I and constructed between 1854 and 1856. It was designed by the Armenian Balyan family — father and son — who were also responsible for the nearby Dolmabahçe Palace. The mosque is designed in the neo-Baroque style. Calligraphy by Sultan Abdülmecid I himself is displayed inside the mosque.
