Istanbul Archaeological Museums

The Istanbul Archaeological Museums are located in the Eminönü district of Istanbul, Turkey, near Gülhane Park and Topkapı Palace. The Istanbul Archaeological Museums consist of three parts: the Archaeological Museum (main building), the Museum of the Ancient Orient, and the Museum of Islamic Art. The museums house a collection of over 60,000 artifacts, with the total inventory exceeding one million items, representing nearly all periods and civilizations in world history. The site attracts around 200,000 visitors each year.

The Istanbul Archaeological Museums were established on June 13, 1891, by imperial decree. The museum site was originally part of the outer garden of Topkapı Palace. Provincial governors of the Ottoman Empire sent discovered artifacts to the capital, contributing to the museum’s rich collection. In 1991, on the museum’s 100th anniversary, it was awarded the Council of Europe Museum Prize. Construction of the main building began in 1881 and was completed in 1908 in the Neo-Greek style; the façade was inspired by the Alexander Sarcophagus and the Sarcophagus of the Mourning Women housed inside. It is one of Istanbul’s notable examples of neoclassical architecture. The Museum of the Ancient Orient building was constructed in 1883 as an academy of fine arts and converted into a museum in 1935. The Museum of Islamic Art was originally built by Sultan Mehmed II in 1472. It is one of the oldest civilian Ottoman-era buildings in Istanbul and forms part of the outer garden of Topkapı Palace.

The Istanbul Archaeological Museums feature an extensive collection of Turkish, Greek, and Roman artifacts. Among the most prominent exhibits is the magnificent Alexander Sarcophagus, discovered in Sidon and once believed to have been intended for Alexander the Great, making it one of the museum’s most famous pieces. Other highlights include the Sarcophagus of the Mourning Women, the Lycian tombs, glazed bricks from the Ishtar Gate of Babylon, a youth statue, parts of the Temple of Zeus in Pergamon, the lion statues from the Mausoleum of Mausolus, and the serpent heads from the Serpent Column in the Hippodrome of Constantinople...
