Sakıp Sabancı Museum

The Sakıp Sabancı Museum is a private museum located in Istanbul, Turkey. Unlike most other museums, this museum is primarily dedicated to collecting calligraphic works, religious and state documents, as well as paintings from the Ottoman Empire. It was self-funded and built by Sakıp Sabancı, a leading Turkish businessman and philanthropist, and opened in June 2002.

The exhibits at the Sakıp Sabancı Museum include 18th and 19th-century Chinese porcelain, colored vases, and floral plates. There are more than 400 calligraphic works on display, showcasing over 500 years of Ottoman calligraphy history. These mainly include manuscripts of the Quran and prayer books, calligraphic panels, decrees, royal documents, legal texts, imperial seals, classical poetry collections, and calligraphy tools. In addition to its permanent collection, the museum also hosts temporary exhibitions and cultural exchange events from both national and international sources on weekends. Recent exhibitions, such as those featuring the works of Pablo Picasso and Auguste Rodin, have drawn worldwide attention.

Since its establishment, the Sakıp Sabancı Museum has welcomed many notable visitors, including Madeleine Albright — the first female U.S. Secretary of State, former Russian Prime Minister Yevgeny Primakov, television host Martha Stewart, American writer Gore Vidal, architect Zaha Hadid, writer and film producer Hanif Kureishi, and musician Michael Nyman.
