Viking Cave

Introduction: There are several massive limestone caves on Phi Phi Leh Island. To protect the island’s ecological environment, the Thai government currently allows public access to only Viking Cave. The cave walls feature prehistoric murals depicting humans, elephants, boats, and more—especially various types of ancient ships including European, Arabic, and Chinese designs, along with more advanced steamships, resembling a global maritime exhibition. It offers a glimpse into how busy the nearby waterways once were. However, legend has it that these caves were once hideouts for Andaman pirates, hence they are also known as “Pirate Caves,” adding an intriguing twist to the murals. The cave also serves as a habitat for many swiftlets, making it a prime spot for edible bird's nest harvesting, which is why it is also called “Bird’s Nest Cave.” Nearby waters may offer a glimpse of the labor-intensive process of collecting these nests.
