Dongbaek Island

There are many islands along the southern coast where camellia trees grow naturally, often referred to as Camellia Islands. Among them, Busan's Dongbaek Island, which used to be an island in the sea, is now connected to the mainland. Dongbaek Island is very small and surrounded by lush camellia and pine trees. At the top of the island stands a statue and memorial monument of Choi Chi-won (a scholar and writer from the Silla Dynasty [58 BC–AD 932]) . Dongbaek Island has been designated as Monument No. 46 by Busan Metropolitan City. Visitors sightseeing in Haeundae can easily see Dongbaek Park on the island and the 2.5-meter-tall mermaid statue near the beach.
