Haeundae is a district in the southeastern part of Busan, South Korea’s second-largest city, covering an area of approximately 51.44 square kilometers and located about 11 kilometers from the city center. The area enjoys excellent transportation access. Historical records indicate that the name “Haeundae” comes from a 19th-century poet and scholar, symbolizing the harmony between the sea and the clouds. At that time, he greatly admired the beach here and built a villa nearby. To this day, calligraphy inscribed by the poet can still be found on the rocks by the beach.

Haeundae Beach is one of the best beaches in South Korea and the most famous and lively beach in Busan. With a coastline stretching 12 kilometers, snow-white sand, crystal-clear waters, pleasant climate, beautiful surroundings, and convenient transport, it attracts a large number of both domestic and international tourists every year for leisure and vacation. Especially during the peak summer season (late July to August), the beach becomes a sea of people. Haeundae Beach also serves as a venue for many international competitions, and various festivals and events are held here throughout the year. These include regular swimming and kite competitions, as well as the “Polar Bear Club” event held annually in the first week of January since 1988 at the Choseon Beach Hotel when the temperature drops to 0 degrees Celsius, drawing numerous visitors. In addition, Haeundae Beach is a great spot in Busan to watch the sunrise. On the morning of January 1st each year, thousands of visitors gather here to witness the first sunrise of the new year, making it one of the most popular viewing spots in the city.
