Beopjusa Temple

Beopjusa Temple is located in Guho-dong, Gyeongju, and is a temple from the Silla period. It was built by Queen Seondeok of Silla (reigned 632–647) and was already very famous at the time. Many renowned monks and painters came here to write scriptures and paint Buddhist artworks. The Buddhist paintings and statues created during that period were lost in wars such as the Imjin War. However, the reason Beopjusa remains well-known is that it houses the Stone Brick Pagoda, designated as National Treasure No. 30. This pagoda was constructed by stacking stone blocks cut and shaped like bricks. Originally nine stories high, only three stories remain today, offering invaluable insight into the development of Silla stone pagoda culture. In addition to the Stone Brick Pagoda, the temple also features the Samryong Well, which has been in use since the temple’s founding, and several other stone cultural artifacts.

Transportation: Take bus No. 10 (every 15 minutes), No. 11 (every 15 minutes), No. 15 (three times a day), No. 17 (one at 6:20 AM), No. 18 (nine times a day), or No. 277 (nine times a day) from Gyeongju Express Bus Terminal or Gyeongju Station toward Bulguksa Temple, and get off at Beopjusa Temple (about 15 minutes). When taking a taxi from Gyeongju Express Bus Terminal, it takes about 10 minutes.
