Hidden Paradise on Earth: Delicious "Trash Rice" at the Foot of Gyeongju's Namsan Mountain

Located in North Gyeongsang Province, Gyeongju is South Korea’s historical capital. In addition to preserving royal tombs from the Silla Dynasty, Gyeongju’s Namsan Mountain is renowned not only for its breathtaking scenery but also as a mountain forest filled with “world heritage.” Moreover, in the vast fields at the foot of Namsan, there is a “hidden” restaurant whose signature dish, “trash rice,” is an unforgettable treat for hikers.

“Trash rice” doesn’t refer to “funeral rice” or “kitchen waste.” It’s called that because the Korean word for “vegetable roots (seol-gi)” sounds very similar to the Korean word for “trash (seol-ji),” which used to scare many Korean children when they heard they were going to eat “seol-gi” rice.

This restaurant, named Yeo-gi-dang, boasts a quaint and classic traditional Korean hanok structure. However, its interior, decorated mainly with wood and featuring window frames and lighting from various angles, gives the entire house a unique sense of beauty and texture.

Yeo-gi-dang offers only two main dishes: “vegetable root rice” and “vegetable root pancakes.” A rich variety of side dishes are made with locally available fresh ingredients. In addition to basic kimchi and vegetable salad, there is also Gyeongju’s unique tofu, along with healthy and nutritious freshly ground brown rice milk. The main dishes, seasoned simply, exude a natural and delicate fragrance. When chewed, they provide a tranquil and deeply satisfying experience.

Transportation: From Gyeongju Station, take bus No. 10 or 11 and get off at Tongiljeon Parking Lot. Walk straight toward the Namsan entrance for about 10 minutes.
Meal Prices: Both vegetable root rice and vegetable root pancakes cost 7,000 KRW (approx. NT$190)
