Tomb of the Golden Crown

The Tomb of the Golden Crown is situated in Nosi-dong, Gyeongju, and is an ancient tomb from the Silla period (57 BC–935 AD), part of the Nosi-dong Tomb Cluster—one of the three major tomb clusters in Gyeongju. It is estimated that the tomb dates back to the early 6th century, around the time of King Jijeung (reigned 500–514), but the identity of the tomb’s owner remains unknown. In September 1921, the tomb’s burial mound was discovered when a residential area was expanded and land was leveled. The first artifact excavated from the tomb was a golden crown, which is how the site got its name. Artifacts unearthed here include golden crowns, gold belts, earrings, bracelets, and other jewelry worn by kings or nobles during the Three Kingdoms period (the era of Goguryeo, Baekje, and Silla, before Silla unified the peninsula in 676), as well as horse tack, weapons, and pottery. Among them, there were over 30,000 beads alone, making it a treasure trove of historical relics. The circular burial mound of the Tomb of the Golden Crown has a diameter of 50 meters and a height of 13 meters. The artifacts discovered here have been transferred to and are on display at the Gyeongju National Museum.

Transportation: The Tomb of the Golden Crown is located 2 kilometers from Gyeongju along National Route 7 in the direction of Ulsan, on the right side of the road. There is not only ample parking nearby, but also city buses heading to Bulguksa Temple. It takes about 10–15 minutes to walk from Gyeongju Station to the museum and garden. In front of the station, you can take buses No. 11, 600, or 604 to the museum.
