Excavated Site of Baksacheong

Baksacheong (covering an area of 7,432㎡) is located on rocks by a stream and was designated as Historic Site No. 1 on January 21, 1963. It was originally the site of a royal villa from the Silla Dynasty (BC 57 – AD 935). The original buildings no longer exist, leaving only a stone water channel shaped like an abalone. The stone trough is curved, resembling an abalone shell—hence the name Baksacheong, which means “Abalone Stone Pavilion.” It is made up of about 63 stone pieces, each 35 cm wide and averaging 26 cm in length, with a total length of approximately 10 meters. It is said that water from the stream in Namsan Valley used to be channeled into Baksacheong and then jetted out through a stone turtle. However, the stone turtle no longer exists. Silla kings often visited this site with their ministers and nobles for leisure. It is said they would place wine cups in the flowing water along the stone trough and compose poetry before the cup reached them, enjoying the refined tradition of flowing wine cups along a winding stream. Next to Baksacheong is the Baksacheon Valley of Namsan, where clear streams and picturesque scenery have been cherished since the Silla period. This is why the Silla royal family chose to build a royal villa here. Today, there are still centuries-old zelkova trees, pine trees, and bamboo groves, creating a serene and elegant atmosphere.

Transportation 1. Bus: Take bus numbers 330, 506, 507, or 508 from Gyeongju Bus Terminal (Gyeongju Station) and get off at the Baksacheong Site Entrance (approximately 20 minutes by bus), then walk for 5 minutes. 2. Taxi: The site is 5 km from Gyeongju Bus Terminal; the ride takes about 15 minutes by taxi.
