Gyeongju Historic Area

Gyeongju is Korea's most representative historic city, serving as the capital of the Silla Dynasty for a thousand years. It boasts an abundance of relics and ruins, making the entire city feel like a historical museum that showcases its long history and heritage. Historic sites in Gyeongju include Bulguksa Temple, Seokguram Grotto, Gameunsa Temple, Cheomseongdae Observatory, and the royal palace complex of Wolseong, with many structures still retaining their original ancient forms.

The Buddhist and royal sites of Gyeongju’s historical culture are well-preserved, offering a comprehensive glimpse into the history and culture of the Silla Dynasty. The Gyeongju Historic Areas are also divided into five zones based on their characteristics: the Namsan Zone, a treasure trove of Buddhist art; the Wolseong Zone, the site of the royal palace from the millennium-long dynasty; the Daereungwon Zone, home to the royal tombs including those of Silla kings; the Hwangnyongsa Zone, representing the essence of Silla Buddhism; and the Mountain Fortress Zone, the core of the city’s defensive facilities. Each zone has its own unique features and rich cultural significance.

Gyeongju’s Namsan Mountain can be described as an open-air museum. It features landmarks such as the Lajeon Well from the founding legend of Silla, the Poseokjeong Pavilion symbolizing the fall of the Silla Dynasty, as well as numerous Buddhist heritage sites like the Mireuk Valley Stone Buddha Seated Statue, the Bari Stone Buddha Standing Statue, and the Seated Stone Buddhas of Seven Buddhas at Seokguram. In addition, precious artifacts reflecting the essence of Silla culture have been excavated here, including gold crowns, the “Chilma” painting (Thousand Horses), glassware, and various pottery items that offer insight into the daily life of the time.
