Kanazawa City

Kanazawa City is located in Ishikawa Prefecture on the Sea of Japan side of the Kanazawa Plain, and is the largest city in the Hokuriku region as well as the prefectural capital of Ishikawa. Since the Edo period, Kanazawa has been known as the "Academy of the Nation," boasting a longstanding tradition of valuing education and caring for students, making it a representative cultural and educational city along the Sea of Japan coast.

During World War II, Kanazawa was spared from the devastation of war, and its historic streets within the old town have been preserved, making it a popular tourist destination that attracts up to 7 million visitors annually. Japanese people typically feel that spring has truly arrived only when cherry blossoms begin to bloom one after another. Among the many beautiful cherry blossom spots in Kanazawa, the most famous is Kenrokuen Garden, which takes on a dazzling charm when illuminated at night. Kanazawa Castle is the city’s most renowned landmark, featuring beautiful wall art with white lead tiles and white lacquer, and its 400-year-old stone walls have been perfectly preserved to this day. The nationally designated Important Cultural Property, Sengankei Pavilion, is a palace built in 1863 by the 13th lord of the Maeda family for his mother.

Kanazawa City is home to numerous art museums and museums, including the Ishikawa Prefectural Museum of Traditional Arts and Crafts, the Ishikawa Prefectural Sightseeing Product Museum, the Ishikawa Prefectural Art Museum, the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa, and the Kanazawa Noh Museum.
