The Kaga-ya Imperial Battle Drum Performance: A Japanese National Treasure That Moves the Heart

Beitou Hot Spring Hotel Nikko Kaga-ya is celebrating its sixth anniversary and is committed to promoting Taiwan-Japan cultural exchange. It specially invited the “Imperial Battle Drums” to perform in Taiwan. The Imperial Battle Masked Drums originate from Japan’s Noto Peninsula, the same region where Kaga-ya is located. During Japan’s turbulent periods, the legendary warlord Uesugi Kenshin suffered only two defeats in seventy battles — one of which occurred when attacking the Noto Peninsula. There, unarmed farmers and fishermen scared off Uesugi Kenshin’s army with the sound of drumbeats, deep guttural roars, and terrifying demon masks. The Imperial Battle Drums have been passed down to this day and are now recognized as an Intangible Cultural Asset of Ishikawa Prefecture.

The members of the Imperial Battle Drums gave a passionate live performance, putting their all into striking the drums while unleashing wild roars and low growls that left the audience amazed. Everyone held their breath in awe, watching this rare and spectacular show. Those interested should hurry to catch this Japanese national treasure-level performance, which will take place every evening from April 29 to May 1 at 6:00 PM on the sixth floor of the Golden Nyang Yuan at Beitou Nikko Kaga-ya.
