Mount Asama

Mount Asama is a composite volcano made of andesite that straddles Agatsuma District in Gunma Prefecture and Kitasaku District in Nagano Prefecture, with an elevation of 2,568 meters. It has taken its current form after numerous eruptions. Active since hundreds of thousands of years ago alongside other nearby volcanoes, Mount Asama continues to exhibit volcanic activity on Kama-yama at its summit, with the most recent eruption occurring on February 2, 2009.

Together with surrounding volcanoes, Mount Asama forms the Asama-Ubuyama volcanic group, which is world-renowned. The area around the volcano features a vast, open plateau that still retains large stretches of pristine forest, inhabited by many wild animals that bring lively colors to the mountain. As visitors ascend toward the summit, they can see stunted larch trees clustered among rocks, with fresh greens and yellow foliage intermingling beautifully. At the foot of the mountain lies a landscape unique to volcanic regions, and because there are no tall mountains blocking the view, visitors can enjoy a spectacular 360-degree panorama of nature.

Mount Asama is one of the most famous tourist destinations in the northeastern Kanto region. The foothills have long been developed as a summer retreat, and the area around the volcano boasts well-established dining and accommodation facilities, along with other tourism-related services that strive to create a comfortable experience for visitors.
