Mount Haruna

Mount Haruna is a dormant volcano located in Gunma Prefecture in the northern part of the Kanto region of Japan. It experienced major eruptions in 495 AD and over the following 30 years. It is one of the Three Mountains of Jōmō (上毛三山), which refers to three major mountains within Gunma Prefecture: Mount Akagi, Mount Haruna, and Mount Myōgi. These peaks hold significant importance in the hearts of the people of Gunma, and their names often appear in the school songs of many junior and senior high schools in the prefecture.

The highest peak of Mount Haruna stands at an elevation of 1,449 meters. At its summit lies Lake Haruna, a volcanic crater lake, and Mount Haruna-Fuji (1,390.3 meters), a central peak within the caldera. Lake Haruna and Mount Haruna-Fuji are surrounded by the highest peak, Mount Sobakake, along with Mount Tenmoku (1,303 meters), Mount Sōma (1,411 meters), Mount Futago (1,344 meters), Mount Eboshi (1,363 meters), and Mount Kamuriki (1,350 meters). Beyond these, there are also parasitic volcanoes such as Mount Mizusawa (1,194 meters), Mount Takanosu (956 meters), Mount Mitsuushi (1,315 meters), Mount Anpei (1,292 meters), Mount Kogarayama (982 meters), and Mount Godan (1,060 meters), making the terrain extremely complex.

Mount Haruna is one of the most famous volcanoes in Gunma Prefecture and has been worshipped since ancient times. To its southwest at the foot of the mountain lies Haruna Shrine, while inside the mountain is Mizusawa Kannon. Throughout all seasons, many people visit to worship or sightsee.
