Mount Akagi

Mount Akagi is located in Gunma Prefecture in the northern part of the Kanto region of Japan and is a dormant volcano. It is an isolated volcanic island formed by the subsidence after the collision of the Pacific Plate and the Okhotsk Plate. Along with two other mountains in the northeastern Kanto region — Mount Haruna and Mount Myogi — it is collectively known as the "Jomo Sanzan" or "Three Mountains of Jomo." "Jomo" is the abbreviated form of "Joumou," the old provincial name for Gunma Prefecture, which was formerly called Joumou Province.

Mount Akagi consists of its highest peak, Kurobiyama (1,828 meters), as well as other peaks such as Komagatake (1,685 meters), Jizodake (1,674 meters), Nagachirouyama (1,579 meters), and Nabetayama (1,332 meters), making it the highest among the Jomo Sanzan. The summit area is surrounded by a range of peaks between 1,200 and 1,800 meters in elevation, while the lower foothills form a plateau at around 800 meters. With its beautiful mountain scenery and abundant natural resources, it has been selected as one of Japan’s 100 Famous Mountains and one of Japan’s 100 Landscapes, attracting large numbers of domestic and international visitors every year. In addition, the mountaintop features a collapsed volcanic crater and crater lakes, while the foothills are home to the Akagi Shrine. The blend of natural and cultural resources together make it one of Gunma Prefecture’s most renowned scenic areas.

Mount Akagi is not only a popular tourist destination but also rich in mineral resources. It is said that the gold reserves within this volcanic mountain range amount to as much as 4 million ryō.
