Nozori Lake

Nozori Lake is a highland lake located in the northwest of Gunma Prefecture and the northern part of Rokugō Village, surrounded by mountains ranging from 1,514 to 2,000 meters above sea level. It originally was a pond within a wetland but was formed after the construction of the Nozori Dam (Nozori Dam), built for hydroelectric power generation in the mid-20th century.

With a circumference of about 12 kilometers, Nozori Lake is the source of the Nakatsu River and is renowned for being home to approximately 300 species of alpine plants. In summer, it becomes especially beautiful with the blossoming of daylilies. The area around the lake offers camping facilities for up to 3,000 people, including campsites, cabins, and mountain lodges. From spring to autumn, the tent camping area in particular attracts many hikers. Some prefer leisurely walks along the flat paths around the lake, while others venture deep into the mountains for a more challenging experience—but no matter the route, the area around Nozori Lake is a stunning destination for getting close to nature.

Aside from hiking, Nozori Lake is also a great spot for fishing. The lake is inhabited by many trout and carp. Even if you don’t land a big catch, simply enjoying the act of fishing amid the green mountains and clear waters is a truly delightful experience.
