Mount Chōkai

Mount Chōkai is a conical active volcano that straddles the border between Akita and Yamagata prefectures in northeastern Japan. With an elevation of 2,236 meters, it is the second highest peak in the region, after Mount Hachimantai (2,356 meters). It is one of Japan’s 100 Famous Mountains, one of the 100 Landscapes of Japan, and was selected as one of Japan’s 100 Geological Sites in 2007, making it one of the most renowned mountains in the northeastern part of the country.

Mount Chōkai is a beautiful volcano also known as Dewa Fuji or Akita Fuji, and is one of the most beloved peaks among mountain climbers. The mountain boasts a rich variety of alpine flora and fauna, and its colors change with the seasons, making spring and autumn the most popular times to visit. In spring, before the snow on the mountain has fully melted, the surrounding lowlands begin to come alive—grass sprouts through the earth and wildflowers bloom in vibrant colors, creating a stunning contrast against the mountain’s lingering white snow. In autumn, when leaves turn red and begin to drift through the air, the entire mountain transforms into a fairytale-like scene, with fluttering foliage that captivates the heart and soothes the soul.
