Foot Onsen Express Train: Soak your feet while enjoying the scenery!

JapanPeople are full of creativity. This time, Yamagata Prefecture has introduced a Shinkansen with built-in foot onsen. Every six-car train includes one car with a foot onsen, which can accommodate eight people at a time.

Soaking your feet in the onsen while gazing out the train window is truly a delightful experience. And if you fancy a drink to go with the view, there’s a Bar Corner inside the train. Enjoying a glass of fine wine from Yamagata Prefecture on the Shinkansen is a unique experience.

This Shinkansen is called “とれいゆ (TOREIYU).” To reserve a spot in the foot onsen, you need to join a local travel agency’s “View” TOUR. But what if you don’t want to join a tour but still want to soak your feet?Yamagata Prefecture’s Tourism Bureauhas three handy tips to help you out!

1) Start your journey from the terminal stations (Shinjo orFukushima)
2) Choose a longer train ride
3) Purchase your foot onsen ticket as soon as you board the train

Some users have shared that it’s easier to get a spot during the off-season—for example, they succeeded in early April. But during peak seasons orJapan’s national holidays, even those who join the “View” TOUR might not get a chance to use the foot onsen!
