Yamagura Warehouse

Yamagura Warehouse is located in Sakata City, Yamagata Prefecture, Japan. It was built in 1893 as an annex warehouse for Sakata’s rice exchange and now serves both as an agricultural storage facility and a tourist attraction. It stands as a witness to Sakata’s glorious past and is one of the city’s most iconic symbols.

The Yamagura Warehouse is made up of 12 rice storehouses. The earthen-walled buildings feature double-layered roofs, and their interiors are structured to be moisture-proof. Tall zelkova trees planted at the back provide shelter from wind and rain for the storehouses and shade for visitors in summer. Currently, two of these 12 storehouses have been repurposed: one houses the “Syonai Rice Museum,” which uses detailed models and display panels to explain the characteristics and history of Sakata rice; the other is open to the public as the “Sakata Yume no Kurabu.”

Sakata Yume no Kurabu consists of two facilities: Hall 1, “The Hall of Splendor,” and Hall 2, “The Hall of Joy.” Hall 1 exhibits materials and artifacts related to Sakata’s history and culture, along with works by Japan’s renowned doll maker, Tsutomu Tsujimura. Hall 2 features a souvenir corner where visitors can purchase gifts for family and friends.
