Shinjō City is a renowned tourist destination located in the northeastern part of Yamagata Prefecture, Japan. It was established on April 1, 1949. Shinjō City is most famous for its stunningly beautiful Mogami Gorge and the Shinjō Festival held annually from August 24 to 26. This festival, originally founded by a local feudal lord in 1755, has evolved over centuries to become one of the most significant events in the Tohoku region. During the festival, people dressed in traditional attire sing and dance, while elaborately decorated floats parade through the streets, creating a vibrant and lively atmosphere. The Mogami Gorge is a canyon carved out by the Mogami River, often referred to as the “mother river” of Yamagata Prefecture. The gorge features rugged rocks and lush cliffs covered with rare flowers and plants, making it a celebrated scenic spot in Japan. Sightseeing boats are available on the gorge, allowing visitors to enjoy the seasonal scenery while listening to traditional Mogami River boat songs as they cruise downstream.
